First, if you suffer from the popular superstition that the Japanese have such an exquisitely fine taste, this is one occasion to get rid of that crazy idea right now. My brother Wim told me after his first visit there: Everything is beautiful
. Bullshit, of course: It's easy for the Japanese to get just as kitschy as we are - with a twist, admittedly. (I mercifully decided to give you some breaks, cutting away to what at least I feel are more tasteful views.)

Their second hand (oh please do forgive me: previously owned
is the corruptically correct term) car lots
certainly are more cheerful than their western counterparts. The cars mostly are in much better condition as well.
