The most famous attraction here is Matsushima and its bay islands; a veritable tourist trap if I ever saw one.
But as you mostly find to be the case, its reputation for beauty is well deserved.

Almost the entire coast from there to the North is one giant natural park, well worth an extended visit. I don't know if the Japanese go for a swim there, but we certainly did not. Not in April, with a stormy breeze from the East. Two good things about that were, not so many tourists; and different lighting conditions from the picture post card views mostly offered.
